The Lockheed SR-71 is an advanced, long-range, Mach 3 strategic reconnaissance aircraft developed from the Lockheed A-12 and YF-12A aircraft by the Lockheed Skunk Works. The SR-71 was unofficially named the Blackbird, and called the Habu by its crews. Clarence "Kelly" Johnson was responsible for many of the design's advanced concepts.

The SR-71 was retired in 1990 following intense and politically complicated debate, partially driven by the notion that advances in reconnaissance satellites and follow-on spy planes made the Blackbird obsolete. Yet, the lack of a replacement and the limitations of space-based platforms saw the reactivation of a small detachment of SR-71s in 1995.

The X-15 famously used a pair of steel skids as the main landing gear rather than conventional wheels, which saved weight, allowed the skids to be mounted externally (where wheels and tires would have been destroyed) so they didn't take up internal space, simplified the extension mechanism, etc.

Note the bare titanium inside the landing gear door, and the aluminum added to the tire rubber to reflect heat away from the rubber in cruising flight. The SR-71 was made of titanium because it couldn't have flown as fast if made from aluminum- heating from just the speed through the air would have weakened aluminum too much.
